The Perth Mint has been releasing “kangaroo coins” since 1989. No, they don’t have pouches on them, or even come with pouches to carry them in, but the do have an image of a kangaroo on one side. The other side has the image of Queen Elizabeth.
So what’s the big deal? Well, the 2012 version of the Perth Mint kangaroo coin holds the distinction of being the largest gold coin ever minted. It measures nearly 80cms wide and more than 12cms deep, and weighs one tonne.
The coin is Australian legal tender, worth one million dollars, so if you care to purchase it, you could use it to finance a lovely villa in Sydney. It’s called “the pinnacle of ingenuity and innovation” by the mint; however, they were strangely silent about how to fit it into your wallet.
